SAY WHAT FISHING CHARTERS NEWSLETTER January 2007
Hello Anglers
I would like to start out by wishing everyone a Happy New Year and the best of health in 2007. As we start a fresh year at Say What charters we would like to start our new year with our first of many newsletters to keep you informed on what is happening on the offshore and backcountry waters around Marco Island and the surrounding islands. We will keep you well informed on the fish being caught as well as the weather conditions of the Gulf during the upcoming months.
Now to what we do best, FISHING!! Although the water temperature and air temperature has been un-seasonably high, fishing over the Christmas Holiday was great. With water temperatures hanging in the mid 70's we have had lots of nice line action catching King Mackerel, Spanish Mackerel, Bonito, and even Tarpon. For those looking for the eaters, the reef has been great at producing large Gag Grouper and of course the Goliath Grouper. Snapper and sheepshead have been a little sluggish as the water is still warmer than normal although over the past few days the snapper action has increased. For those die hard fishermen, I have had beautiful catches of Large Gag Grouper up to 20lbs and Large Mangrove snapper up to 6-7lbs on my full day charters fishing out to 28 miles. All and all the weather has been great with few cold fronts and the fishing action steady. Bag limits for Grouper are 1 red Grouper per person at a minimum size of 20inches, Gag and Black Grouper are 5 per person with a minimum size of 22 inches and Mangrove snapper are 10inches in state water and 12 inches in federal water(9 miles or greater) with a state bag limit of 5 per person and federal bag limit of 10 per person.
This year we have added an addition to our fleet with a 22.5 foot Mako open fishermen and now offer backcountry trips. Join us in the beautiful 10,000 Islands for a great fishing trip.
For those backwater folks, Redfish are still being caught with the occasional Snook along with them. Sheepshead are not real active yet as the water needs to cool down. Snapper remains steady with some large Mangrove snapper being found in the backcountry. For the Sea Trout lover, the season is now open with plenty of trout being caught south of Marco. Just remember the regs for trout at 15inch min with a 20 inch Max. You are allowed one fish over 20inches per person. Also look for silver trout and whiting which tend to hang with the sea trout. There is no size restriction or bag limit on silver trout or whiting. Be sure that you don't mistake sea trout as the can be identified buy the spots on their back. Sea Trout has a bag limit of 5 per person.
Again, my wife and I welcome you to our first newsletter and we will continue to keep everyone up to date on the fishing as well as season openings, bag limits, tricks to catching fish and changes in regulations.
Happy New Year from Say What Charters
